I have a 94 Cougar and the bearings in the AC clutch are shot. The mechanic says about $1,000 to replace the whole AC and from what I've read this may not be the only option. I'm wondering how difficult it would be to replace the fly wheel that the serpintine belt goes around or if it is even possible. Since I rarely(if ever) use the AC, it seems like there may be a cheaper easier fix to this problem. I would run it as is but my mechanic warns me of the belt burning up or breaking if the bearings lock up on the AC flywheel. Any ideas?
